The Ockley Video, 2022

Help make a movie

Ockley has a proud tradition of recording its fascinating history. Ever since photography was invented, there have been records of people and events that have shaped the village and led it to the place we know today. The advent of moving pictures brought us the first film of Ockley in 1953, Coronation year.

In 1997, the Society supported the production of a video documenting a year in the life of Ockley. This video took us month by month through the year with its festivals and celebrations including, its defining event The Ocklympics which showed us serious people being given silly things to do, providing great entertainment for the appreciative crowd.

The intervening 25 years have brought many changes to the village and its way of life, whilst many traditions like the annual quiz, the Cricket Sevens and the winter events of Bonfire night and Christmas are still enjoyed by all.

It is time to plan a new video which will document Ockley in 2022. With the advances in technology, almost everyone has a device to film events spontaneously thus democratising its production and enabling us all to own it. We intend to post guidelines on the Society’s website for all who would like to contribute to what will be a great movie and eventually an important historical document.

You can register your interest in contributing to this historic video, by emailing the Chairman of the Ockley Society Alan Hardy

Ockley Video 2022

Guidelines for contributors

1.    Topics to consider

If you have time, do look at the 1997 Ockley video. It will give you an idea of the range of topics that were covered. It may prompt you to think of things that have changed and subjects that it did not cover but which you think are important.

As well as the regular village events such as peopled centered activities like quizzes and Cricket Sevens and the Ocklympics, if they are held in 2022 and there will be lots of spontaneous opportunities to capture if you have your device handy. For example, the natural world, and individual interviews can be very interesting. Nothing is ruled out.

2.    Material format

Although MP4 will be standard, footage in any format will be considered. If you are using a smart phone, do remember to shoot in landscape format. Individual clips should normally not exceed four minutes. Please consider editing your material yourself before submitting it.

You will be able to upload material into a designated dropbox.

3.    Time scale

Please submit material as soon as it is ready. The final editing will be done at the end of the year and obviously the final date for submissions is 31st December 2022.

4.    Context

We are already well into a new century. Ockley, like other villages is impacted by a number of changes to our national life. Just as the 1953 film was made with the Coronation as its context and the 1997 video had the background of a general election, this video will have both COVID 19 and climate change as background themes. There may be opportunities to reflect how the village has coped and responded to these unprecedented issues.

5.    Editorial and release

The editors will consider material and its content, the voice-over commentary and music where it is used.  You will be able to make suggestions about every aspect of the material you submit.

Your name will appear in the credits for whatever of your material appears in the released movie.  Good Luck!
